In this remix, the Necrons started out as a aquatic species from a hot planet filled with a heavy soupy atmosphere. Meaning one could swim out water and "wade" thru the air. Their planet was filled with deep seismic vents in the planet's crust, which heated most of the planet plus a radioactive star for a sun. The planet is usually dark, and what is considered "bright" would be something like Earth's tropical shallows during moonlit nights.
Most life centered around the vents for heat, energy and respiration. But the planet was filled with uranium, which gave many creatures radiation poisoning, or being ill from it at least once in their lives.
On this planet evolved a large intelligent species known as the Necrons who fed on microscopic creatures, biochemicals, UV radiation, and almost anything that floated into their vent-like filter mouths. They had compound eyes, a brain in the "hump back", and a mouth/eyes extension that a human might mistake for a "head" and two large arms, with each having a specific functions; meaning two arms were never the same. The Necron shell was thin and flimsy with a metallic sheen. Their flesh itself was clear with blood similar to the neon fluid of glowsticks.
Necrons live a life accumulating status and acts to boast of, so the longer a individual lives, the more boasts and status he can accumulate. Life is measured in acts, boasts, petty feuds, small trivial "wins", roast-and-gag victories, and how much valuable
"things" whether material or just conceptual, is accumulated.
This race for status became so intense that eventually they started using their advanced and deeply shamanistic religious rituals to literally go into a trance, their soul walks out of their biological body, and then imbed into a purchased and customized robotic one. The longer living robotic body could allow the necron inside to outlive his biological rivals, show off customized wealth and "swagger", and the body would eventually die leaving the eternal soul now with more possible status.
But in time, this too became a race, and some individuals opted out of living biologically for centuries and in a robot for a time from 2 or 3 thousand years to tens of thousands of years. The most valuable robots lived shorter lives, thus upping the boasting power of a individual.
But rivalries made this even worse. By the time the Necrons had come into conflict with the Imperium of Man, they were already letting even the higher class live close to 50,000 years, and some living around millions.
Necron culture is one where every day is filled with petty grievances, showboating, religious ritual, and politics. Their technology was driven to hyper advanced levels due to clique vs clique rivalries. Religious leaders, children, and usually those who don't enter the intense social lifestyle live common lives while the leaders of multiple nations and clans constantly bicker or ally, thus causing a nation or state to unite into a alliance one moment, and in a week's time, be enemies.
For necrons, "war" is just intense roast-and-gag sessions or mind games, and the most humiliated without a ability to save face is the loser. Actual war with death is seen as a last resort, but one all necrons will unite in against a non-necron, or any force they feel can not be trusted to be allowed into their enclaves. A human or non-necron who proves their loyalty or no speciesism is allowed into cliques and enclaves and seen with a sense of love and pity.
Necron weaponry is either too fast or slow for what humans understand as a weapon. An example is what humans call the "jellyfish light" - a literal beam of thin vapor that seems to glow by chemical power, and filled with all manner of "disembodied jellyfish venom and needles riding microscopic worms driven and controlled by not-yet-understood or supernatural "voodoo" like power." It is true that a shaman does mind-control these worms carrying a "backpack filled with jellyfish needles and venom". The beam is shot at a foe, and the vapor pushed at light speed. Once hit, the worms rush to a most delicate area, such as back-of-eyes, brainstem, etc, and roll over unleashing a payload of venomous lancets. Sometimes radioactive. Thus soldiers hit by Necron weaponry may die immediately or decades later. Always screaming in agony.
