Mermaid of the Karoo

Since Medieval times, people have claimed to see mermaids in the Karoo deserts, singing their siren songs of sadness skyward in longing for ancient times when the sands were once beneath wave and tide.
'Could they be real?' some cryptozoologists wonder.
